History of ABBDA

Founded in 1984 by six visionary women in Oakland, California, the American Black Beauty Doll Association (ABBDA) has a rich history of empowering children through the celebration of Black dolls.

Born from a desire to see their daughters reflected in the toys they played with, the founders recognized the dearth of positive Black doll representation in the marketplace. ABBDA began as the American Black Beauty Doll Club, hosting annual festivals that showcased the talents of Black doll artists from across the nation.

In 2018, ABBDA incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, solidifying its commitment to increasing the visibility and availability of quality dolls of color. Through its work, ABBDA aims to enhance children's self-esteem, promote cultural diversity, and foster a deeper appreciation for Black artistry and heritage.
